For the past year I have earnestly created a body of nature-inspired contemporary oil paintings based on my experiences walking the trails with my young daughters around my Reston, Virginia home.
The Shadows series speaks to my curiosity of the scrawling lines of naked tree branches, the whispering movement of cast shadows, and the sculptural crevices of discarded seed pods. I cant stop looking and absorbing the shapes of those shadows other forms- roots, seed pods, and other small places for creatures to hide-- they fascinate me. I feel that this collection of paintings walks a fine line between realism and abstraction, exploring that specific boundary between the two in the natural world. With every walk with my children, I become more and more inspired.
The paintings are created with oil washed thinly in some areas and applied thickly in others, and then scrubbed, painted, and layered again, which results in a very ethereal appearance so like the momentary dance of moving shadows on the trail. Under the layers of paint, I also use vine charcoal to scrawl lines and simple drawings to add texture. I like the rich and tactile quality these materials and processes provide, connecting me further to the natural world.

A contemporary artist with a focus of minimalism and modern design, Morgan creates paintings have been described as innovative, bold, and distinctive, yet with a soft, ethereal focus that evokes images of stones to trees to human cells and nerve endings, beautifully pushing the point that we are irrevocably connected to the world around us.
